Mystery Trips 2025
A rare Sunday off, during the week of Memorial Day. I visited Stockton for the night.
First thing I did was to drive to the Western Railway Museum, where I rode the 11:00 am trip
out the line free with my membership. They used Portland Traction 4001. Alighted at
the Loring Jensen Memorial Car House (#3) for a guided tour (three of us with the conductor of that trip).
It was neat to see the newly acquired BART A, B, and C class cars, along with fully restored
San Francisco Muni PCC 1016. It's nice that the first and last of the Baby Tens series 1016-1040 are
preserved.
Took more photos of the 4001 as it left Car House 3 and as it rounded the curve in the park and picnic area.
Next I drove to Stockton and JJ Fish & Chicken at Hammer Lane and West Lane for a shrimp and fish meal.
After a stop by Walmart on Hammer, I sought San Joaquin RTD operating services on the Transit app. Seeing a 793 bus in the
app, I went to El Dorado St. to wait for it. However, I got a very pleasant surprise on El Dorado, because one
of the five SJRTD hydrogen buses was running! As I followed it and carefully consulted the website, I learned that
they were operating a park and ride shuttle from UEI College at Claremont and W. Yokuts Aves. to the county fairgrounds
at Airport Way and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. There were long lines of vehicles waiting to enter both
thoroughfares, so it's a good thing RTD ran the shuttles. I don't think very many people used the buses, though.
The route was in the El Dorado and Center Sts. corridor. That's why I'm glad I drive my Camry, so I can
follow the coaches to figure out where to photograph them. This session started just before 5 pm, so I had the
challenge of locating well sunlit areas as shadows grew longer. The website gave the headway as 30 minutes from 11 am to
9 pm. I tracked down New Flyer XH40 buses 14402 and 14403 at various points. The purpose of this trip WAS to seek
Stockton's fuel cell buses.
Nikon D5600 and Samsung Galaxy A54 5G cameras yielded 279 photos.
