Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) began service Friday, August 25, 2017 with free rides that day, half priced fares for the next week, and regular fares thereafter. Fourteen Nippon Sharyo DMUs (with four on order) operate in two or three car trains between San Rafael and Santa Rosa, with future expansion plans to Larkspur and Cloverdale, along upgraded existing rights-of-way.
